From Weaver to the ALPAC Report

چکیده
This paper presents a sample pertaining to the creation and the use of words in the field of Natural Language Processing (NLP) in the years 1949-1966. These words have been statistically sorted and the results could be taken as a proof that electronic processing of linguistic data leads to the diffusion of clear and concise words for describing a complex concept which would need a circumlocution to be described instead. The aim of this article is to provide an evolutionary overview of these new lexical forms in the various languages for the period taken into account and, whereas possible, a data register and a tabular representation have been prepared as

When Is The Next ALPAC Report Due?
~.~chine translation has a scme%~at checquered history. There were already proposals for autcmatic translation systems in the 30's, but it was not until after the second world war that real enthusiasm led to heavy funding and unrealistic expectations. Traditionally, the start of intensive work on machine translation is taken as being a memorand~n of Warren Weaver, then Director of the Natural S...

Research on MT has passed through five eras to the present day. The first period began with the memorandum from Warren Weaver in 1949 which effectively launched MT research. The second began with the 1954 demonstration of a simple system for translation from Russian to English, which encouraged government agencies in the US and elsewhere to support largescale projects. This period was brought t...
متن کامل11 ALPAC : The ( In ) Famous Report
The best known event in the history of machine translation is without doubt the publication thirty years ago in November 1966 of the report by the Automatic Language Processing Advisory Committee (ALPAC 1966). Its e¤ect was to bring to an end the substantial funding of MT research in the United States for some twenty years. More significantly, perhaps, was the clear message to the general publi...

In 1965 the United States Academy of Science cemmissoned a study of he state of the art in Machine Translation, whose findings were published the following year and become popularly known as the ALPAC report. In essence, ALPAC argued that there was insufficient scientific basis in natural langauge processing to perform reliable machine t~anslatinn, and the large expensive computers of the time ...
متن کاملOUT OF THE SHADOWS A retrospect of machine translation in the eighties
The end of a decade is a traditional, even if somewhat arbitrary, time for looking back at what has been achieved, and for looking forward to what may come in the next decade. In the past, epochs of machine translation (MT) began and ended at the mid-points of decades. In the mid-1940s, Booth and Weaver first talked about the use of the newly invented electronic computers for translating natura...
